Puppy’s First Grooming in Fuquay-Varina, NC
Walk-in & same-day dog grooming appointments available in Fuquay-Varina, NC
A puppy’s first grooming visit matters more than people realize. Get it right and your dog will hop up on the table every six weeks for the rest of their life. Get it wrong — rushed, rough, scary — and you’ll be fighting that memory for years.
The goal of a puppy’s first groom is not a perfect cut. It’s a positive experience.
When to book the first groom
Most puppies are ready for their first real grooming visit around 12 to 16 weeks, once they’ve had at least two rounds of vaccinations. Before that, we can do a “puppy intro” — a short, gentle visit just to get them used to the building, the noise, and the table, without a full groom.
What the first visit looks like
- A walk around the shop so the puppy can sniff and decompress
- Lots of treats
- A short bath at a comfortable temperature
- Gentle introduction to the dryer at low setting (this is the part most puppies have feelings about)
- A simple, conservative trim — face, paws, sanitary. We do not do a full breed haircut on a first visit. That comes later.
- A nail trim — short snip, lots of praise
The whole visit is shorter than a full groom — usually 60 to 90 minutes — because we’re prioritizing the puppy’s emotional baseline over the haircut.
What to do at home to prepare
- Touch the feet daily. Squeeze the toes gently. This is the #1 thing that prevents nail-trim drama later.
- Brush a little every day, even if there’s nothing really to brush yet. Make the brush a normal thing.
- Run the hair dryer in the same room while you’re doing something else. New sounds in safe contexts.
- Feed treats during all of it. Touch + reward = touch is good.
About puppy doodles specifically
Doodle puppies have soft, fluffy coats that look easy to manage. They aren’t. Around 6–9 months, the puppy coat starts being replaced by the adult coat, and that transition is where 90% of bad matting happens. If you have a doodle puppy, plan on a groom every 6 weeks starting from the first visit — not “when the coat looks like it needs it.”
