First thing to know: a matted coat is not a moral failing. Life gets busy. Coats change faster than people realize. A dog goes from “needs a brush” to “fully matted” in about three weeks, and once that happens, brushing at home actually makes it hurt more.

If you’re reading this because your dog is matted, the worst thing you can do is wait longer. The second worst thing is to try to scissor it out yourself — we see vet-bill emergencies from home haircuts every month.

How we approach matting

We have one rule: the dog comes first. That means we will always walk you through your options before we touch the coat:

  1. Light matting — we can usually brush it out with conditioner and a slicker brush. No drama, just a slightly longer groom.
  2. Moderate matting — we do controlled, careful de-matting in sections, with breaks for the dog. This takes time and patience but saves the coat.
  3. Severe matting (matted to the skin) — we’ll recommend a shave-down. Trying to brush this out hurts the dog. We’ll talk you through it before we make any decision, and we’ll show you the skin underneath before we go further.

When you book, we’ll text you with photos and an honest assessment before starting anything that changes the price or the cut. No surprises.

Pricing

Matting work starts at $10 for light, localized matting. Heavier matting is quoted at the appointment based on time required. A shave-down on a severely matted dog is usually priced the same as a full groom plus the matting time.

How to keep this from happening again

After a de-matting session, we’ll send you home with:

  • A brush recommendation that will actually work for your dog’s coat — we’ll show you the difference between a brush that pretends to go through the coat and one that actually does
  • A realistic brushing cadence (most curly coats need 2–3 sessions a week)
  • A groom schedule we think will keep this from happening again

If you can’t brush regularly, that’s fine — we’ll just bring the groom schedule closer together. Honest conversations work better than guilt.
